EMS vs. TENS: Which Device Do You Need?

March 27, 2026 2 min read

If you’ve been researching electrical therapy devices, you’ve encountered both EMS and TENS. They look similar and both use electrical impulses — but they work differently and serve different purposes.

TENS: Targeting the Nerves

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) units target sensory nerves. The electrical signal interferes with pain signals travelling to the brain — a mechanism known as the Gate Control Theory of pain. TENS is primarily a pain management tool. It reduces the perception of pain without directly affecting the muscles.

You’ll feel a tingling or buzzing sensation with TENS, but your muscles won’t visibly contract.

EMS: Targeting the Muscles

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) units target motor nerves and the muscles directly. The electrical impulse causes the muscle to contract — just as it would during voluntary exercise. This makes EMS suitable for:

  • Muscle recovery after exercise or injury
  • Preventing muscle atrophy during immobilisation
  • Strengthening weak or deconditioned muscles
  • Improving muscle tone and endurance

Which One Do You Need?

  • Choose TENS if your primary goal is pain relief — particularly for nerve-related pain, chronic conditions, or post-surgical discomfort.
  • Choose EMS if your primary goal is muscle recovery, rehabilitation, strength maintenance, or performance.

The FitRelax Pro1 is an EMS device, designed specifically for muscle stimulation and recovery. Many users find it effective for pain relief as a secondary benefit — particularly the lower-frequency modes which increase blood flow and reduce tension.
